This is one of a series of 1033 Japanese National Treasures at the time of publication.

All of the swords designated as Japanese National Treasures are arranged according to the country of the swordsmith and the lineage of the swordsmith, in the following order: tachi, koutachi, naginata, tanto, and saber.

The collection contains photographs of all 122 swords, including diagrams and engraved inscriptions on the stems.
However, most of the photographs of swords are in black-and-white, as many of them are from reference materials.

Each illustration is accompanied by a description of the sword's name, inscription, name, location and address, owner (national, temple, private, museum, etc.), and dimensions (blade length, warp, original width, tip width, and peak length) and period. The owner of the sword, which is currently in the collection of a museum or art museum, can be identified as of 1984.
Detailed explanations of the style of construction, highlights, and traditions of all the pieces are included.
