Triumph
Herald and Vitesse
Herald, 1200, 12/50, 13/60, Vitesse, 2-litre

By Graham Robson

The little Triumph Herald and its bigger sister, the Vitesse, are remembered with fondness to an extent seldom known in the 'classic car field' and there has to be good reason for that. In a nutshell, each model has great character, even quirkiness, which doesn't come in abundance in other similar British cars. Perhaps more to the point, however, is that its very construction of separate body and chassis has enabled many examples to survive today when the ravages of rust and general deterioration have killed off much of the potential competition. The Herald/ Vitesse package is a survivor.
Graham Robson's book takes the enthusiast through the Herald's pre-history-the Standard 8, 10, and Pennant. Then the Italian prototype influences of Michelotti's 'Zobo', the production prototypes from Coventry and finally the finished article. Once established as an acceptable model in the Triumph range, the variety of the then subsequent versions moves on. Then there's the launch of the six-cylinder Herald, the Vitesse in 1600 form, further developments of both Herald and Vitesse, and finally a full stop. Triumph goes the way of all others with the monocoque front-wheel-drive 1300 and the rear-wheel-drive Toledo.
Additional material traces the development of the other cars which used Herald/Vitesse components -the Bond Equipe, the Fairthorpe and more.
Triumph Herald and Vitesse is a fascinating tale of enthusiasm and the unconventional, one which has never been fully researched before. Once again the record is straight.

Graham Robson has long been known as perhaps the foremost Triumph Cars historian with much writing beneath his belt on the subject. As he managed to do with Triumph Spitfire and GT6 (a previous book published by Osprey Publishing in this format) Graham has once again sorted the mystery from the ridiculous and told this interesting story with considerable feeling and insight for he was employed by the company during the Herald's heyday.
