We
are offering for your consideration an exquisite, and rare, silver plated, five-piece,
Tea and Coffee Set manufactured by the Meriden Britannia Company, circa” 1867. The
company was organized in Meriden, Connecticut in 1852 to make Britannia ware
and silver plated hollowware. The service can be seen in the, “American
Silverplate” book by Dorothy Rainwater and Donna Felger, 3rd.
edition. A photograph of the page is included noting that in the year 2000, the
revised price guide for this service was $1500. The hallmark has been inscribed
over by what I believe is the name of a jewelry store in NY that sold the
service in the Victorian period. One can still see the n in Meriden and the Britannia
and Company names in the hallmark. The pattern number, “5100” is also noted.
The approximate measurements are:
**Hinged Coffee Pot measures 11.50 inches high, 9.50 inches wide from handle to spout and 4.50 inches in diameter at the round base.
**Hinged

4 inches in diameter at the round base.
**Creamer measures 6.25 inches high, 5.50 inches
wide between the handle and spout and 3 inches in diameter at the round base.
**Waste
Bowl measures 5.25 inches high, 5 inches in diameter at the top opening and 4

When
manufactured, this fabulous service was a complete departure in shape from all
others. The acorn shaped pieces of the Charter Oak pattern made by the Meriden
Britannia company and were illustrated in their 1867 catalog. It was also one
of the first designs of that early period to be named. Naturalism is carried
out to the fullest extent in the cast Oak leaves, and Acorns on the handles,
spouts and finials as well as the embossing and engraving of the additional oak
designs on the bodies. A truly extraordinary service that is rare and hard to
find. The pieces rest on round bases keeping them off of your serving surfaces
to prevent heat and cold marks. The
service is in EXCELLENT READY TO USE ESTATE
CONDITION. There is very little silver wear
to note, no dents, or repairs. It may have been resilvered but it is hard to
tell. The insides are clean with little wear and no pitting. A reputable, internet replacement company has the creamer available for $495.00. Makes our price for the entire set a great deal. A marvelous and
rare service manufactured by one of America’s finest and oldest companies that
will grace your dining table or buffet for many more years to come.
