Bank-sealed starter kit comprising of 19 mint, uncirculated Irish euro coins, as shown.

Starter Packs
In the run-up to January 1, 2002, all of the Euro Zone countries issued starter packs of the new euro coins. These were issued through banks and post offices on a strictly limited basis. They were never intended for sale to collectors, and it was common policy that, on January 1, 2002, any remaining kits were recalled by the respective central banks, opened and repackaged in regular bags according to denominations, thus making it impossible to acquire them in large quantities.

Issue Limit
The Republic of Ireland issued very few of these compared to larger EU countries like France or Germany. Having been distributed fairly evenly among the general public as the very first euro coins in circulation, the vast majority of these packs would have been torn open so people could familiarize themselves with this brand new currency. Once opened, the packs are worthless to any collector. How many packs were eventually recalled and ‘destroyed’ by the Central Bank of Ireland is not known.

These starter packs/kits are now increasingly difficult to find!
