In
order to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of Led Zeppelin, Jimmy Page has teamed
up with Fender to make a special collection of four Telecaster models based on
the very instrument used to bring those early Led Zep songs to life! There are
two Custom Shop guitars, one USA made model and a Mexican made Page Tele too.
This Mexican made instrument is probably the
most recognisable. Known as the ‘Dragon Telecaster’, this is based on Page’s
1959 Telecaster, gifted to him by Jeff Beck. All of these Anniversary Teles are
based on this legendary guitar actually: Page stripped the original White
Blonde finish and painted the Dragon himself so Fender have opted to release
Anniversary models showing the different stages of ‘evolution’!This iconic
guitar is recreated faithfully here with an Ash body, a D-profile neck with a
7.25” Rosewood slab fingerboard and a pair of pickups specially wound to
Jimmy’s own preferences.
The Dragon paintwork looks great: Fender
have taken their time to pay proper tribute to this most mysterious of guitars.
The Red and Green hues are correct and the detailing is impressive.
Elsewhere, there is a ‘top-loader’ bridge
which allows you to string the guitar through the body or just across the top,
changing the feel rather dramatically.
The package contains some great ‘case candy’
in the form of a red coiled cable and a vintage strap, not to mention the
hardshell case itself! You also get a special neck plate and a print of Page’s
signature on the headstock.
Specification
The Jimmy Page Telecaster features a two-piece ash
body stripped and hand-painted with Page’s original design – colorful curls of
green, orange, yellow, blue and red that snake around the guitar in a
serpentine fashion. A pair of Fender® Jimmy Page Custom Tele® single-coil
pickups deliver the incendiary, full-bodied tone that inspired the
unforgettable licks on Led Zeppelin’s first album. The custom “”Thin
D””-shaped maple neck has a 7.25”-radius slab rosewood fingerboard
with 21 vintage-style frets, giving it a smooth playing feel. The “top-loader”
bridge allows for through-body or top-load stringing, which produces a rounder,
warmer tone and less tension so you can bend the strings with ease. Other
features include a bone nut, vintage-style tuning machines and disc string tree
for an authentic style and performance.
Created alongside Page himself, the Jimmy Page
Telecaster also boasts personalized touches like a Jimmy Page signature on the
headstock and on the custom chrome neck plate, a red coiled cable and a
vintage-style strap. About his beloved Telecaster, Jimmy said it best: “I
really made it my own – it’s quite a magical guitar.”
