Representing one of the biggest departures in design and technical detail from any generation of 911 to the next, the fifth-generation 911 (Type 996) was the first production iteration of Porsche's seminal model to include a water-cooled motor and share few, if any, major parts with previous versions. Between the end of air-cooled production and the cost-saving measure of using the same front clip between the 911 and the less-expensive Boxster, purists were quick to proclaim the company had lost its way. Critics and enthusiasts, however, recognized the changes for what they were: Porsche needed to not only bring the model into the 21st century, but had to do so from a clean slate to ensure performance, comfort, and safety were improved corresponding to buyers' tastes.
The 996's introduction in 1998 was limited to the standard Carrera and Carrera 4. The Turbo, once again only available in AWD as with the 993, was released in 2002 and was quick to appease any enthusiast still questioning the 996's performance potential. A year later, the 'X50' performance package (using elements from the range-topping, ultra high-performance GT2) gave buyers the chance for even more power. Larger turbos, an improved intercooler, and other changes increased power from 415 to 450hp. Carbon-ceramic brakes were an option, allowing for repeated fade-free high-speed stops - perfect for the budding track enthusiast. As with all 911s, the Turbos have held (and gained) their value more strongly than standard cars. With values for air-cooled 911s having surpassed most average enthusiast's budgets, attention has turned to the 996 and later cars. As such, values have raised steadily, with special and/or well-equipped cars standing above the rest.

In regards to winning bidders and Buy It Now customers: All winning bidders and Buy It Now bidders are encouraged to fly out and personally inspect the vehicle. If you deem the vehicle is not as represented upon personal inspection, we will not only refund your deposit, but will also reimburse your airfare at the cost of a coach ticket. Feedback must be left at the time of delivery upon final inspection.
