Selling here is 'Costumes of British Ladies from the time of William 1st to the Reign of Queen Victoria', undated but published circa 1842 (date taken from the watermark to the paper). A scarce and beautifully illustrated large format Victorian production, with hand coloured plates depicting British ladies costume through the ages. 

Folio, in original gilt ruled red morocco gilt boards, recently rebacked preserving a section of the original backstrip, lettered and decorated to upper, blind tooled device to lower. Later salmon endpapers.

The book measures 28cm by 37cm.

The contents are lacking one of the forty nine plates called for, present are 48 tipped in hand coloured lithographed fashion plates ( each with short accompanying description and tissue guard) and the hand coloured engraved title.

Condition: Restored binding firm and in good condition thus, though much wear and scuffing to the leather of the original boards and remaining section of spine. Contents are firmly bound and in good clean condition as seen, some light foxing and handling marks, plates numbered in pencil upper right. The engraved title leaf has been remounted onto a stub during the binding process.
