This is an original press photo. New Orleans Museum of Art - Gold Chimu Mummy Mask - Chimu (800-1470 A. D.) In Chimu times the dead were pleased in a seated, flexed position and wrapped with multiple layers of cloth. in burials of important people masks such as this specimen fashioned from sheet gold, were then positioned over the face area of the mummy bundle. It was a common practice among ancient Peruvians to paint over the golden surface of a mask with brilliant colors, and to add decorative touches such as feather, shells, and semi-precious stones. Remnants of these embellishments still cling to several of the masks in the exhibition, Peru's Golden Treasures, January 14-April 15, 1979. Photo measures 10 x 8.25 inches. Photo is dated 11-19-1978.
