Map of the land of Canaan or land promised to Abraham and his posterity: The biblical authors call the country of Canaan a territory bounded to the west by the Mediterranean Sea, to the east by the Jordan, to the north by a line running from the springs from the Jordan to the sea, in the south by a line running from the southern extremity of the Dead Sea to the southeast corner of the Mediterranean. This territory, originally occupied by the Canaanites, would have been intended by the divinity for the descendants of Abraham, i.e. to the Israelites or Hebrews, and they would have seized it under the leadership of a leader named Joshua by repressing or exterminating the indigenous population.
