☆Kawase Hasui(1883-1957)☆
A printmaker who, along with Ito Shinsui and Yoshida Hiroshi, was a standard-bearer of the new printmaking movement. To revive the declining Ukiyo-e prints in Japan, he established a new style of Ukiyo-e prints called "Shinpanga" together with Shozaburo Watanabe, a publisher. He was a leading figure in modern landscape prints, traveling throughout Japan and producing many prints based on pictures he sketched during his travels. He has been called a "traveling poet," "traveling printmaker," and "Hiroshige of the Showa era" for his lyrical style of expressing beautiful Japanese landscapes. He is widely known in Europe and the United States, where he was introduced by the American connoisseur Robert Mueller, and is more highly regarded overseas than in Japan, where he is as popular as ukiyoe artists Katsushika Hokusai and Utagawa Hiroshige.
