1986年《南北少林》是中國功夫巨星李連杰1982年出道以來第三部電影，由武術動作大師劉家良執導又一步部少林功夫片。此外，片中還有1982年曾與李連杰第一部電影《少林寺》的于承惠(內地武術運動員、青島市武術全能冠軍)、以及1984年《少林小子》合作過的黃秋燕和胡堅強同台演出。

這套電影是在嵩山少林寺實地拍攝，發揚少林功夫。電影的故事是講述清朝大臣和同僚先後遭朝中的奸臣毒手。兩家的後代練成高強武功，並準備報仇和清除朝中的奸臣。一是被山門托孤出家的北少林智明(李連杰飾演)，一是隨長輩法仁隱匿南少林的俗家弟子司馬燕(黃秋燕飾演)，還有南北少林弟子合力報仇雪恨。智明與奸臣激戰連場，最後並把奸臣清滅……

李連杰自1982年首部電影《少林寺》打出名堂，1984年 《少林小子》及這部《南北少林》(1986)也令他一炮而紅、搖身一變成為功夫巨星的80年代的經典代表作品。

Lau Kar Leung, director of Martial Arts of Shaolin, is one of the most incredibly talented and pervasively influential action directors of Hong Kong cinema history, most known for his films with Shaw Brothers from the late sixties to the mid-eighties. He offers in Martial Arts in Shaolin some unforgettable battles in the Forbidden City, the Great Wall, and even on the Yangtze River, in which Jet Li also shows off his superb kung-fu.

A magnificent martial arts saga with more than 300 martial experts supporting the massive fighting scenes, Martial Arts of Shaolin sees Jet Li as monk Chi-ming from the Northern Shaolin Temple. He meets a girl Yan (Huang Chiu Yen, Jet Li's real-life ex-wife), a secular disciple of the Southern Shaolin Temple, when they co-incidentally attempt to assassinate a villainous aristocrat. The mission almost costs Chi-ming's life, but he also discovers that Yan is more than just a Shaolin martial arts girl...
