A truly GIGANTIC ( 10 3/4" tall ) beautiful deep PURPLE AMETHYST colored, rectangular shaped, antique PHARMACY / DRUG STORE / APOTHECARY bottle. This is an ORIGINAL ANTIQUE Blown Glass bottle with a cork-top, dating OVER 100 YEARS OLD.
A TOTAL knock out of a bottle-- not only the GIGANTIC size (nearly 11" tall!) but also a WHOLE LOT of PURPLE color. You hear about old glass turning purple ... ? ... The natural color of glass back in the 1800's was aqua, but aqua glass was not desirable for bottling food products in. It was discovered that adding pulverized manganese (a mineral) to the hot glass would turn the glass clear. But once the had been blown into a bottle, the manganese would oxidize when it was exposed to the ultra violet rays of the sun, and turn a nice purple hue. Germany supplied the U.S. with manganese as it was a little ahead in the manganese supplying process. Yet with the start of WWI manganese was no longer available as foreign imports decreased and domestic resources turned towards the war effort. Selenium sulfate then replaced manganese as a glass de-colorizer and when exposed to UV rays, it turns a yellow / straw color, and a dark burnt amber color. Generally speaking, purple glass dates back from before 1914. Since purple glass is so attractive to look at, many collectors today have found various ways to speed up this process by exposing clear antique jars and bottles to different types of lights and/or heat. But, only the antique glass (pre-1914) with manganese in it will turn purple. This bottle was exposed to a high heat or light source that sped up the purpling process and produced the beautiful deep purple color. It is NOT altered, as the purple color would occur naturally over many years exposure to the sun, in this case it was just hastened. Not only is it a KNOCK-OUT bottle in this LARGE SIZE, but also a whole lot of purple glass in this large size, check it out!
