For sale is an uncirculated proof-like Barber Quarter in an off brand holder. Nice deep mirrors are complimented by a sharp strike on all stars, forehead and arrow feathers. For accuracy, I do believe the grade is at least one to two tiers lower than what appears on the holder. There are some faint hairlines that are grade limiting in my opinion. Nonetheless, a unique item in and of itself, Proof Like business strike Barber coinage can be viewed as scarce to rare. Additionally, it is atypical for these pieces to remain on the market long.

In regards to the 1898 S Barber Quarter, David Lawrence writes in his book The Complete Guide to Barber Quarters (1994),

One of the three "Philippine hoard" dates (with the 1899-S and 1900-S). It is usually available in XF to AU at West coast shows, though these coins have often been cleaned. Truly rare in mint state because most of the coinage evidently went to the Philippines and few survived in new condition. From time to time these coins have pulsed back into the U.S. market. Severely underpriced in today's market up to gem condition. Nice examples should be purchased at anything close to current levels.

As a collector at heart I’m slowly starting to move some duplicate items from my collections to make room for interest in other series. Stay tuned for more fresh and intriguing coins. Please feel free to message me with any questions.
