Sugai Kumi (1919-1996)
Born in Hyogo Prefecture in 1919.
After attending Osaka Art School, he worked as a graphic designer.
At the same time, he studied under the Japanese painter Nakamura Teii and continued to develop a deep interest in Western art.
In 1952, he moved to France. In 1952, he moved to France, where he painted hieroglyphic images with delicate matière, which immediately won him high acclaim in the Parisian art world.
Fascinated by the tension and speed of a sports car racing at ultra-high speed, Sugai turned to dynamic abstract paintings with clear colors and forms, using this sensation as inspiration.
In his later years, he continued to paint the motif of "S," which is not only the artist's initials but also evokes the continuous curves of a road, and found the significance of his artistic activities in the act of continuing to paint the same pattern.
His works with strong graphic elements have a somewhat retro-modern atmosphere that feels fresh even today.
