engraving antique from 1841ca (History of the conquest of Algeria by France)
engraving intaglio from 1841 representing a reproduction of a painting by Théodore Gudin. Work entitled: “Landing of the French army at Sidiferruch". The engraving was part of a work listing works of art linked to the history of the conquest of Algeria by France present at Versailles. The African troops landed on June 14, 1830 on the Sidi Ferruch peninsula 30 km west of Algiers, their objective was to take the fortress of Algiers from the rear, which had been deemed invincible since the attack by the Spanish troops of Charles V in the 16th century. The French only encountered a small detachment from a coastal battery that was quickly submerged and around 1,000 inhabitants began to leave the city of Algiers.
Dimensions: 26 x 37 cm
Please look at the photos carefully, not everything can be described. The engraving presents a certain number of defects quite common for its time, notably some foxing or stains. The defects are mainly concentrated on the periphery of the sheet.
