.50 Calibre Trench Art Bullet Cigarette Lighter

On a Lucite base which probably was added at a later date.

c.1944

Impressed on the bottom of the bullet is 4TW.

This is the Headstamp.

headstamp is the markings on the bottom of a  cartridge case designed for a firearm, it usually tells who manufactured the case.

This bullet was manufactured in 1944 at the:

Twin Cities Ordnance Plant: Minneapolis, Minnesota.
Operated by the Federal Cartridge Company from 1941-45.
This company produced .30, .45, and .50 calibre ammunition.

The Browning M2 machine gun was the most widely used weapon on the American bomber and fighter planes of WWII.

Due to the high demand of ammunition for this gun, many companies began producing the .50 calibre round to keep the supply available.

The .50 calibre round is 5.5" (140mm) long with seated bullet.

The casing alone is just under 4" (100mm) long.

The primer end of the casing where the headstamp is located is 0.75" (19mm) diameter.

The bullet is typically 2.25" (55mm) long with 0.75" (19mm) seated into the casing.

The bullet diameter is 0.50".

All measurements are approximate.

The lighter weighs 125g with Lucite Base attached.

CONDITION - In good original used condition and showing wear consistent with age and use, mainly to the inside.

The lighter has had the cotton wool and wick removed.

The original wick is included and the cotton needs to be replaced.

The strike is good.

There is no flint in it.

I have not polished it preferring to have the original bullet patina showing through.

If required, it will polish to a high shine.

When closing the lighter tends to slide down the chamber of the bullet mainly because I used WD40 on it as it was too tight, this will correct itself as the WD40 wears away or if you remove it and it will remain a nice snug fit but not too tight to refuel.

The lighter is ready for reloading.
