The Spartan king Leonidas is in full battle attire with his army behind him, and a few Persian warriors in front. Some details of the coin are emphasized by red-gold plating with the aim of reproducing the blood poured in battle. The obverse of the coin displays a small image of the Ian Rank-Broadley effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, completely surrounded by a detailed map featuring the Pass of Thermopylae.
