Service issued the Year of the Tiger 32¢ gummed stamp with an intricate Chinese
paper-cut design by Clarence Lee on January 5, 1998 in Seattle, WA. Kenji
characters on the left, by the professional calligrapher, Lau
Bun, translate "Year of the Tiger," and in the upper right of
the stamp, the tiger declares "Happy New Year!" in English. The tiger
is the 3rd of the 12 animals in the Chinese zodiac associated with the Lunar
calendar. People of Chinese, Korean, Vietnamese, Tibetan, and Mongolian
heritage celebrate the Lunar New Year. People born in the Year of the
Tiger are said to be courageous, strong and mysterious.
