KM 6, six year type, issued for Manchukuo--Manchuria under Japanese control, during World War II. Quarter dollar size bronze coin, with a flag on the obverse.

Japanese forces invaded Manchuria in 1931. For many people, this invasion marks the beginning of World War II in the Pacific. Major military offensives in 1937 and 1938 added additional areas, including areas bordering Mongolia, to Japanese control.

Japan used the coinage of its captured countries as a source of metals. The coinage of Manchukuo clearly shows the progression, as metals used in war materials were recalled, and the coinage replaced by lesser metals--copper-nickel to aluminum, until the last issues were of red fiber!
