◎「The Maiden of Dōjō-ji」(Signed "Yukimaro hitsu"; publisher's mark of Õmiya Gonkuro/Important Art Object)

◎The tale of Dōjō-ji, which tells of the passion of the Maiden of Dōjō-ji for a young monk, is a tragic love story in which the girl is the aggressor. Ultimately, she is transformed into a fiery serpent and consumes the monk by wrapping her body around the bell of the Dōjō-ji temple, under which he has hidden. The theme was first the subject of a No drama and then became one of the spectacular and popular dance dramas of Kabuki. Eventually, the dance Musume Dōjō-ji (The Maiden of Dōjō-ji) came to be per- formed even by amateurs.

Yukimaro's design shows a girl wearing the courtier's hat and costume of a shirabyōshi (dancing girl), with a temple bell and cherry blossoms in the background. Although close to Utamaro in style, the color and line drawing are more complicated. This is fortuitously in keeping with the colorful nature of the dance.
