1933 Press Photo John Jacob Astor & Eileen S.S. Gillespie announce engagement

New York - The betrothal of John Jacob Astor and Miss Eileen S.S. Gillespie, members of two of America's oldest families was announced today. The engagement was revealed by Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence Lewis Gillespie, of New York City in a formal announcement from their apartment at the Mayfair House. Young Astor, is the son of the late Col. John Jacob Astor, who lost his life in the sinking of the Titanic, and Mrs. Madeleine Astor Dick Fiermonte. He is a lineal descendant of the John Jacob Astor who founded the huge family fortune. Miss Gillespie is the daughter of the former Irene M. Sherman and the granddaughter of Mrs. Watts Sherman and the late Watts Sherman. She is a great-granddaughter of the late John Carter Brown of Providence whose family founded Brown University, and a descendant of Roger Williams, who founded Providence in 1640. On her father's side Miss Gillespie is the granddaughter of the late Maj. General George Lewis Gillespie, Civil War officer, and secretary of war under President McKinley.
