◎「One Hundred Famous Views of Edo-Kanegafuchi on the Ayase River」(Signed "Hiroshige hitsu"; publisher's seal reading "Shitaya Uoei", and censor's seal, with cyclical seal of the seventh month of 1857)

◎Much has been said and written about the origin of the name of Kanegafuchi, situated at the fork of the Sumida and Ayase rivers. The essayist and researcher in Edo literature, Shigeo Miyao, says in Tokyo Mukashi to Ima (Tokyo, Past and Present), "The bell of the Chōshō-ji Temple at Hashiba (the foot of the Shirahige Bridge in Asakusa) fell into the river here during the Genko era (1321-1324) flood, thus causing the place to be called Kanegafuchi, or Bell Pool. However, a controversy arose because some maintained the bell to be that of the Toshima clan, thus inspiring a popular comment in verse:

The bell's not even been struck;
Such a fuss over the name of Kanegafuchi!

The flowers of the silk tree in full bloom and the man on the raft with his yukata tucked up suggest the coolness of the river. This impression of summer cool is further emphasized by the contrast of the rich foreground colors against the pale blacks of the far distance.
