◎「One Hundred Famous Views of Edo-Bamboo Yards Near Kyōbashi Bridge」
(Signed "Hiroshige ga": publisher's seal reading "Shitaya Uoei," and censor's seal, with cyclical seal of the twelfth month of 1857)

◎The unusual compositional device of using perspective aimed at a distant point from below a bridge located slightly above the center of the format was originated by Hokusai around his fortieth year. It attracted attention when first employed in his "View of Takahashi" in the series commonly called "Western Woodblock Prints Signed in Hiragana."

Hiroshige adopted this device in depicting Take-gashi, or the bamboo wholesale dealers' row, along the river edge near Kyobashi Bridge. The full moon shines down on the vertical and diagonal lines formed by the skyward-stacked bamboo, contrasting with the curved lines of the bridge in striking harmony.

Hiroshige's fame as a master landscape artist rests particularly on his poetic interpretations of snow, rain and moon landscapes. In this print he has skillfully applied the three main colors of pale black, Prussian blue and pale blue, with touches of green, yellow, purple and red in an enchanting picture that conveys the invigorating mood of an autumn moonlight night.
