Details: "With his first two novels, Watership Down and Shardik, Richard Adams has achieved world-wide acclaim.  The Plague Dogs, his third novel, confirms his stature as a writer.  It is the most exciting and moving book he has yet written.
Set in the Lake District, it recounts the adventures of two dogs who escape from an establishment where experiments are carried out on animals for so-called scientific reasons.  Both dogs have suffered horribly.  Once free, they join forces with a fox and attempt to live wild, killing and stealing what they can.  Locally, every man's hand is soon against them; and national alarm breaks out when it is learned that they may be carriers of the bubonic plague with which scientists at the research station have been experimenting.  Detachments of the army with helicopter support, government officials, the police, journalists and naturalists bring the story to an unexpected close.
As with Richard Adams's other novels, the story can be enjoyed at any level from thrilling narrative to philosophical debate.  At the core of this book is the tragic dilemma of dog fleeing man's cruelty yet constrained to rely on many for his survival.  In part, the book is an exciting escape story; in part, an impassioned plea for a more sensitive, more responsible attitude towards the whole natural world.  Richard Adams evokes the Lakeland setting with the precise knowledge of one who knows and loves it; and as a novelist he brings it before us in all its astonishing beauty."  (dust jacket flap)

A fine addition for your bookshelf!

About Us:

Rivendell Antiquarian Books sells used rare, vintage and collectable books predominantly from pre 1970. We have been sellers of antiquarian books for over 20 years, and our experience helps ensure quality descriptions of our rare and collectable books. Be assured that we want your experience with Rivendell Antiquarian Books to be enjoyable and problem free.

We believe that it is a travesty to simply throw away a used book when there is little or nothing wrong with it - we believe in giving each book the chance of finding a new home. We appreciate the impact a good book can have. We know the excitement of a new page turner, or the familiar joy of an old favorite, and we find satisfaction in putting older, and often scarce books in the hands of people who have the same love for old books that we do.

Customer Service:

Rivendell Antiquarian Books is committed to ensuring each customer is entirely satisfied with their puchase and our service. If you have any issues or concerns please contact us and we will be more than happy to help.

Our books have been inspected carefully by hand by experienced book valuers to ensure the condition description is as accurate as possible for this exact copy pictured. If you have questions about the book before or after purchasing, please feel free to contact us!

Packaging:

We take pride in packaging our books for safe delivery, and if you check our feedback, you will see this reflected in the comments of many pleased customers. For nearly all of our books, we use a specially designed boxing system from IPS (Inovative Packaging Solutions) located in York, PA. These media shipping boxes are designed to conform to the size of the book, securing it and preventing it from bumping around during shipping. The end result is a box which provides a double thickness of cardboard covering the front and back of the book; actually almost like a box within a box. The outer layer of cardboard extends beyond the ends of the inner "box" which very efficiently protects the corners of the book from being bumped and damaged by the sometimes rough handling packages receive in transit. In addition we place the book in a plastic bag to help guard against moisture if a package is left out in the elements.

Delivery:

We aim to get all books shipped within 24 hours of order except on weekends. We can't control the delivery time once a book leaves our hands, but most of the time USPS is prompt in delivery, and the expected delivery time given by eBay is usually fairly accurate. Because we use media mail to keep costs down, it does take a little longer for delivery, and occasionally packages get delayed in the mail system. If for some reason your order has not arrived within the expected time frame, please get in contact with us so that we can try to help you.
