1968 Press Photo View of the deck of the Coast Guard buoy tender Juniper
This is an original press photo. The four officers and 35 crewmen aboard the Coast Guard buoy tender Juniper service 149 buoy units - 77 lighted and 72 unlighted - between Cedar Key, on the north, and Cape Romano on the south. The job of the crew is constant inspection, replacement, and repair of the buoys. The work begins when the Juniper slides up beside the navigational aid. The crane lifts the buoy out of the water and onto the deck and the crew begins its chores scraping off the barnacles, making necessary adjustments and repairs on the lights and other signal devices, and repainting the old before it is returned to the appointed station.Photo measures 10 x 8 inches. Photo is dated 04-14-1968.
