  • Description: An antique pewter plate having the touch of Samuel Danforth active 1795-1816 in Hartford Connecticut. The plate has a mark showing an eagle with stars around its head and the word SAMU.. above it and ORTH below it (see mark 106 in Jacob's Guide to American Pewter Book) and is also marked with the four ovals next to each other the first with the letters S.D, the second with a spread eagle, the third with a star and the fourth with a dagger (see the bottom half of mark 103 in Jacob's Guide to American Pewter Book). This plate is ~8" in diameter with a single reed edge being ~1 1/8" wide. The plate has a depressed center decorated with an incised line near where the edge starts with a rounded edge. The rim itself also has no decoration. The plate has a depressed center with a decorative incised line along its periphery. The plate shows many utensil marks, scratches and minor pitting. It has some dings and is lightly toned. A well-used antique pewter plate with very obvious and well-defined marks. A nice antique pewter plate, which would make a nice addition to your collection.   • Date: Sometime in the period 1795-1816.

  • Origin: Was purchased at an estate auction in Southeastern Pennsylvania. The plate was made in the Hartford Connecticut.

  • Size: The plate measures ~8" in diameter, is ~1/2" high, and weighs ~11 ounces.

  • Maker: Samuel Danforth active 1795-1816 in Hartford Connecticut.

  • Marks: The plate has a mark showing an eagle with stars around its head and the word SAMU.. above it and ORTH below it (see mark 106 in Jacob's Guide to American Pewter Book) and is also marked with the four ovals next to each other the first with the letters S.D, the second with a spread eagle, the third with a star and the fourth with a dagger (see the bottom half of mark 103 in Jacob's Guide to American Pewter Book).

  • Condition: The plate is in good condition given its age (over 200 years old) and utilitarian function. It has no breaks, cracks, or repairs. The plate has a light gray age patina and shows a lot of character. It shows many utensil marks and scratches as well as some minor pitting. It has some dings here and there, which can be seen in the photos. This is a well-used antique pewter plate with very obvious and well-defined marks. This is a very nice piece worthy of a spot in your collection of antique pewter. It would probably benefit from a good cleaning to bring out its full beauty, but we leave that to the discretion of the new owner. Please see photo for additional condition information.
