Superb Antique Victorian Cased Tintype Portrait Photo of a Handsome Gent c1870

Here on offer is a superb antique Victorian caed tintype portrait photo of a handsome gent, c1870.

A tintype is also known as a melainotype or ferrotype. It is a photograph made by creating a direct positive on a thin sheet iron coated with dark lacquer or enamel and photographic emulsion. They were at their height of popularity in the 1860s and 1870s, but did continue into the very early 1900s. Initially they were made in a studio setting but were widely available at carnivals, fairs and at the seaside as the image needed almost no drying time and so could be handed to the customer within a few minutes.

This image is of a gentleman in a studio setting. The portrait is set in a gilt arched frame, held in a small brown leather case with burgundy velvet lining, the catche and hinge are in good order. The image in certain light, is beautifully clear and sharp, while in other light it becomes a ghostly negative and mirror-like with degrees of clarity.

The photograph is being offered in good antique condition as described, the case measures about 8.1cm by 6.4cm by 1.5cm.

A delightful and rare collectable piece.
