About This Items

  1. The second generation of the Nogawa family, Tokutaro Nogawa (Youzan I), was born in Obanazawa City in 1900 and moved to Shinjo City with his parents when he was five years old.
  2. From early on, he learned doll making and sculpture under the tutelage of Kitayama. Tokutaro eventually became a prodigious puppeteer like his father, and under the name of Yozan, he produced theatrical puppets, bunraku puppets, Noh masks, and other works.

  3. In haiku and haikai, he inherited the Shofu Ise school of haikai, a school that was in the tradition of Basho, and was the master of the Koike Church of Mikio Mimori, a member of the Shunsha-an school in Tokyo, as well as the second generation head of the haiku association "Hokuyo-sha. He was also a master of the Hosho-ryu school of noh chanting, and his wide-ranging interests and education were reflected in his puppet and Noh mask works.

  4. Compared to Kitayama, Yozan I's dolls had a more modern and realistic look.
  5. This was also reflected in the dolls on the floats, and the dolls of the first Yozan increased the power of the floats and the reputation of the Shinjo Festival.
