1-page handwritten letter, sent from 61 Great Cumberland Place.

Dated 1903.

Written to "My dear General" (General Sir Alfred Edward Turner).

"The V.D arrived yesterday without my going to or saying a word to Garrard. Many thanks for taking so much trouble, yours sincerely, Dunmore".

The V.D mentioned is presumably the Volunteer Officers' Decoration which was produced by James Garrard & Co.

Charles Adolphus Murray, 7th Earl of Dunmore VD (1841 – 1907) Scottish peer, Conservative politician, explorer, author, and artist. He traveled to North America to observe the American Civil War with a number of other British officers. He then traveled at least as far as southern Manitoba and painted a number of watercolours across the United States and Canada. In 1874, he was appointed a Lord-in-waiting in Disraeli's government. Lord Lieutenant of Stirlingshire. Lieutenant-colonel of the 1st Inverness-shire Rifle Volunteers. In 1892–93 he travelled through the eastern Pamirs to Kashgar. He was engaged in some form of diplomacy or espionage but the matter is not clear.
