KM not yet listed, undated type issued c. 1545-1597.  Dime size silver coin (18mm and 0.8 grams), with the coats of arms of Lorraine and Bar on the obverse, and the Sword of Lorraine on the reverse.  The coin also has a countermark of an alerion on the reverse.

The obverse legend is: CARO D G LOTAR B DVX (cross of Lorraine)

The reverse legend is: MONETA ACTA NAN (cross of Lorraine)

The Sol Carolus was issued during the reign of Charles III (1545-1608), and it originally had a value of 12 deniers.  In 1597, its value was reduced to 10 deniers, and the official alerion countermark reflects this change.  The alerion is a mythological bird--smaller than an eagle--of which three appear on the coat of arms of Lorraine.
