Exceptionally rare and original, 1905 Native American Sioux Indian Weekly Food Ration Card from the Rosebud Agency.

This outstanding, early 20th century Sioux Ration Card measures approx. 1 7/8” by 3 3/4" and retains its original, cloth ribbon hanger. The Card was issued to the Family of “John Goodman”. It is titled simply “Weekly Rations” and dated 4th quarter of 1905. It lists the Goodmans as “Family 109” consisting of a Man, a Woman and 2 male children. The Ration Tag has been used with various holes punched and notations made recording the issuing of Beef and other rations to the family. Although the location where the Ration Card was issued and used is not identified, we have been told that the Sioux family of John Goodman resided at the Rosebud Agency from approx. 1895 when John married his wife Susan Walking Mouse through at least 1910.

The system of issuing rations to Native Americans living on reservations in the 19th and early 20th century was a necessary and well established means by which the United States Government would provide for the needs of those that they had displaced from their lands. “Ration Day” was a weekly event at the various reservations and the issuing of Beef on the hoof made Ration Day as much of an “event” as a process. Ration Cards like the one offered here were issued to each family living on the Reservations as a way to keep track of who had received their rations and which families were due their weekly supplies. These ration cards are exceptionally rare and very difficult to find in any condition.

The Ration Card offered here is unconditionally guaranteed original and of the period. It is NOT a reproduction or modern recreation but an original Rosebud Agency Ration Tag issued and used in the 4th quarter of the 19th century. The Card comes with our “no questions asked” return privilege and our lifetime guarantee of authenticity. It is guaranteed to be deemed authentic, original and as described by any qualified third party authentication service.

This very rare and original, 1905 Sioux Rosebud Agency Ration Card is in very good condition. The Card is intact and sound and it retains its original, cloth tape hanger at the top. The Card is used and has various punch holes, slashes and notations that attest to the fact that the Goodman Family received their weekly rations throughout the fourth quarter of 1905. Please see the scans below for a good representation of the form and the condition of this rare Sioux Reservation Ration Card.
