Tatooine Showdown #84158 .0000

STAR WARS EPISODE 1 Asst. 84115 Cinema Scene (Hasbro) 1999

The Tatooine Showdown Cinema Scene is a part of the initial wave of merchandise for Star Wars: Episode 1 - The Phantom Menace released by Hasbro in 1999. This set captures a pivotal moment from the Star Wars saga, featuring the characters Darth Maul, Qui-Gon Jinn, and Anakin Skywalker on the desert planet of Tatooine as the Qui-Gon Jinn is attempting to escape after just freeing Anakin during the climatic Pod Race.

Qui-Gon Jinn was a maverick Jedi Master known for his deep connection to the Living Force and his unconventional beliefs. Born on an unidentified planet in 92 BBY, he was taken to Coruscant as an infant to be trained in the Jedi Temple. Under the tutelage of Jedi Master Dooku, Qui-Gon honed his skills and eventually attained the rank of Jedi Knight. His journey was marked by the training of several apprentices, including the ill-fated Xanatos and the more successful Obi-Wan Kenobi. Qui-Gon's independent nature often put him at odds with the Jedi Council, but his wisdom and strength were undeniable. His most significant contribution to the Jedi Order was the discovery of Anakin Skywalker, whom he believed to be the Chosen One destined to bring balance to the Force.

Darth Maul is a character shrouded in darkness and mystery. Born on the planet Dathomir, Maul was a Dathomirian Zabrak who was taken as a child by Darth Sidious, trained in the ways of the Sith and the dark side of the Force. His fearsome appearance, with striking red and black tattoos and a crown of horns, matched his ferocious combat skills, which were enhanced by his use of a double-bladed lightsaber. Maul's presence in the film was brief but impactful, as he mortally wounded the Jedi Master Qui-Gon Jinn during the Battle of Naboo before meeting his own apparent demise at the hands of Qui-Gon's apprentice, Obi-Wan Kenobi. However, Maul's story did not end there; he survived, fueled by a deep-seated hatred and desire for revenge against Obi-Wan. His journey continued in the animated series "Star Wars: The Clone Wars" and "Star Wars Rebels," where he evolved from a Sith apprentice to an independent agent of chaos within the galaxy.

Anakin Skywalker's journey begins on the harsh desert world of Tatooine, where he lives a life of hardship as a slave alongside his mother, Shmi. Despite his young age and the oppressive conditions of his servitude, Anakin is remarkably gifted with extraordinary piloting skills and a natural affinity for mechanical engineering, having built his own podracer and the protocol droid C-3PO. His talents are not unnoticed, as Jedi Master Qui-Gon Jinn, stranded on Tatooine with his apprentice Obi-Wan Kenobi, senses the boy's strong connection to the Force. Anakin's potential is further highlighted by his victory in the perilous Boonta Eve Podrace, an event that not only secures his freedom but also marks the beginning of his fateful journey towards becoming a Jedi—and eventually, his fall to the dark side as Darth Vader.

“After enduring heavy damage during their escape from Naboo, the Naboo Royal Starship is forced to land on the desert planet of Tatooine. Returning from Mos Espa with Anakin Skywalker, Qui-Gon is ambushed by a figure in flowing dark robes-it is the evil Darth Maul. Ordering Anakin to the ship, Qui-Gon matches his awesome Jedi skill against the Sith Lord's sinister power. Both escape with their lives, but it would not be their last meeting.”

The STAR WARS EPISODE I toy line, released by Hasbro in 1999, was launched prior to the release of 'The Phantom Menace' and featured a wide array of characters and vehicles from the film. The collection included highly detailed 3.75" action figures, which at the time, introduced a new level of paint and sculpture detail, along with increased points of articulation on select figures. The launch event for this collection was the first 'Star Wars midnight madness' sale, particularly memorable at Toys'R'Us stores, and in a move of marketing brilliance, it took place just before the release of the film creating unprecedented demand, excitement and sales. The Episode I Collection not only catered to the excitement of the new film's release but also set a precedent for future STAR WARS toy releases, influencing collector trends and the expectations for quality and interactivity in action figures.

The CommTech accessories works as a stand for the figure as well as allowing figures to speak phrases from the movies when placed on a separately purchased CommTech reader. Some had the ability to play certain phrases or sound effects when combined with other CommTech chips.
