Details

  • Description: Redware, art pottery, covered jar with an overall orange or salmon colored glaze both on the inside and outside. It is globular in shape with a flat bottom and arched ear-shaped handles on the side. The piece has a flared top which meets the jar's shoulder in a recessed neck. The top ends in a rounded rim where it accommodates a round lid with a central knob shaped finial. Please carefully review the photos as they are part and parcel of our description.

  • Date: Early1900s.

  • Origin: Jugtown, North Carolina

  • Size: 5" diameter on top, 3 1/2" diameter on bottom, ~6" at its widest, and 4 3/4" tall. The lid is 4" in diameter

  • Maker: Jugtown Pottery

  • Marks: Impressed Jugtown Mark "Jugtown Ware" and a central Jug with a handle.

  • Distinguishing Characteristics - Most Interesting About The Piece: This is an antique and beautiful Jar. It has a very nice form and color, which makes this piece a true beauty.

  • Condition: The jar is in excellent condition. It has no cracks, repairs or hairlines. It does have general crazing to the glaze with minimal glaze losses. It also has a one very small chip on the outside of the rim. Additionally it has what looks like a 3/4" chip to the glaze at the rim (see first photo), but after looking at it under a magnifying loop we believe it to be a spot where the glaze may have chipped off during the making and it is original to the piece. Finally as is the case with all these primitive old redarware pieces, the jar also has a few of the usual defects you would expect such as pops, unglazed areas and uneven spots. Most important, the lid is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, or repairs, which is very unusual.

  • In Closing: This is a great jar which is beautiful, solid and in absolutely great shape after being around for about 100 years. The nice colored glaze and the beautiful globular form make this a very nice piece to display. This jar deserves a prominent spot in any redware collection.
