“AFRICAN ART: An Introduction”

By: Frank Willett

[Part of the World of Art series, with 261 illustrations, 61 in color]

The art of the Fang, the BaTeke, the BaKota and other African peoples is extraordinarily vigorous and shows a brilliant sense of form. The substantial aesthetic impact their works had upon the development of twentieth-century Western art — on Picasso, Derain, Braque and Modigliani among others — continues to this day

Here is revealed the astonishing variety and expressive power ofthe art ofa continent that contains more distinct peoples and cultures than any other. The revised edition incorporates new research and modern place names as well as extended and updated references and bibliography. “[It] transcends the discipline of art history to become an indispensable part of the history of the skills and ideas of mankind.” (Scientific American) “An exemplary study.” (journal of Asian and African Affairs)

The book is a softcover, and was published in London by Thames and Hudson in 1964 (though this is a more recent edition). It is 288 pages long, and also includes an index, & footnotes. 261 illustrations, and there are 61 of them in colour – most of the colour ones are full-page plates. The book is used, but is in very good condition, with no writing, no stains or soiling, no missing or torn pages, and a tight spine & clean cover. Top bidder should add $22.99 postage within Canada, or $25.99 for mailing to the USA. I have other, similar books up for sale now, so please check them out too!
