A BOOK OF TREES

by
ADRIAN HILL

~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~

  • Hardcover with unclipped dust jacket; 128 pages; Size Approx. 7 1/2 X 10.
  • Published by Faber & Faber; copyright 1951, First Edition.

Details: "There are at least two different ways of looking at trees.  One can look at them, dispassionately, as super-vegetables, owning various botanical characters.  Or one can look at them, passionately, as the most beautiful and varied large-scale adornments with which Earth has covered her nakedness.
Mr. Adrian Hill approaches trees as an artist, rather than a botanist or an arboriculturist.  He loves them, and sees them in their totality -- winter and summer alike, different as these two aspects are; and for the beautiful drawings making up this book, he has chosen individual models which have been allowed to develop their proper beauty.
Foresters, concerned only for the saleable products of afforestation, may not much like this book.  The tree, grown as a crop, is a thing of little or no beauty.  In many parts of England, however, there are still very many lovely trees, planted simply for the sake of their loveliness -- and by men who could not have hoped to see that slow growth of beauty achieed in their own lifetime.
These are the trees still living and growing, that Mr. Hill's pencil lovingly portrays.  Each drawing is a drawing of an individual tree.  Banish the idea that a tree is just a vegetable, or a mere prop for pits and housing-programmes.  See the tree as a tree, and think again!"  (from the dust jacket flap)
The book has a brown cloth binding with green lettering on the spine.  Illustrated with various trees in black and white on 104 different plates.
A fine addition for your bookshelf!

Condition:  The book is showing very light wear; the endpapers are unevenly tanned; otherwise the book is in good condition with a firm binding and clean pages.  The spine on the dust jacket is sunned and has water spots on it (see picture); the folds are darkened; light edge wear; otherwise it is in good condition.

About Us:

Rivendell Antiquarian Books sells used rare, vintage and collectable books predominantly from pre 1970. We have been sellers of antiquarian books for over 20 years, and our experience helps ensure quality descriptions of our rare and collectable books. Be assured that we want your experience with Rivendell Antiquarian Books to be enjoyable and problem free.

We believe that it is a travesty to simply throw away a used book when there is little or nothing wrong with it - we believe in giving each book the chance of finding a new home. We appreciate the impact a good book can have. We know the excitement of a new page turner, or the familiar joy of an old favorite, and we find satisfaction in putting older, and often scarce books in the hands of people who have the same love for old books that we do.

Customer Service:

Rivendell Antiquarian Books is committed to ensuring each customer is entirely satisfied with their puchase and our service. If you have any issues or concerns please contact us and we will be more than happy to help.

Our books have been inspected carefully by hand by experienced book valuers to ensure the condition description is as accurate as possible for this exact copy pictured. If you have questions about the book before or after purchasing, please feel free to contact us!

Packaging:

We take pride in packaging our books for safe delivery, and if you check our feedback, you will see this reflected in the comments of many pleased customers. For nearly all of our books, we use a specially designed boxing system from IPS (Inovative Packaging Solutions) located in York, PA. These media shipping boxes are designed to conform to the size of the book, securing it and preventing it from bumping around during shipping. The end result is a box which provides a double thickness of cardboard covering the front and back of the book; actually almost like a box within a box. The outer layer of cardboard extends beyond the ends of the inner "box" which very efficiently protects the corners of the book from being bumped and damaged by the sometimes rough handling packages receive in transit. In addition we place the book in a plastic bag to help guard against moisture if a package is left out in the elements.

Delivery:

We aim to get all books shipped within 24 hours of order except on weekends. We can't control the delivery time once a book leaves our hands, but most of the time USPS is prompt in delivery, and the expected delivery time given by eBay is usually fairly accurate. Because we use media mail to keep costs down, it does take a little longer for delivery, and occasionally packages get delayed in the mail system. If for some reason your order has not arrived within the expected time frame, please get in contact with us so that we can try to help you.
