Svend Axel CELIUS, FANTASY
Gorgeous Grain, Plateau Ridge
Hand-Made, Very Near Mint!

Offering a beautiful Danish Freehand by Svend Axel Celius of Denmark. It’s from his early fancy freehand design he called FANTASY. These are hard to find these days, as most his pipes were in the “Chess” line. I think the Fantasy is an excellent collector’s pipe, as few show up for sale in my experience. This one does not disappoint, with a classic and unique design, showing off some beautiful flame grain across both sides of the bowl, rich color and nice contrast, really gorgeous to my eye. The outer exterior of the bowl has a natural plateau surface, giving the pipe a cool look. The bowl exterior is in near mint shape, no noted wear to the bowl. The bowl interior looks great, lightly and evenly seasoned, so it should smoke well. The stampings are also clear, and easy to read. Stem is original and is hand-cut with simple elegant detail, has just a couple minor tooth marks on the upper button. The pipe is a nice collector’s piece, and this one is very sharp looking. Weighs in at about 1.55 ounces, it’s been freshly polished and is ready to smoke!

I offer Pipe Consignment, message me for details, if interested!
Please see my other Auctions! Combined shipping of multiple items no problem, wait until auctions end to pay, and I’ll send a combined invoice! Additional cleaning may be desired on some pipes, as I focus on the exterior reconditioning and reaming, and leave the shank interior to the new owner, pipe stand not included with any pipe. Click photos BELOW to enlarge, and see more photos! Returns OK before you smoke any pipe.

Svend Axel Celius learned his craft from Poul Rasmussen and Sven Knudsen, Rasmussen’s foreman, starting around 1959/60. He saw the interest in Danish freehand pipes in the US market and started a shop in 1963. His success was up and down over many years, employing up to 20 co-workers, and he closed his shop in the mid 1970’s. After that still worked solo into the late 1980’s but never matched Rasmussen’s other students like Former Nielsen, Sven Knudsen or Tom Etlang. He is known for three main lines of pipe. The first is Fantasy, with wild and fancy designs. Next is Zenia, pipes in classic forms, and named after his daughter. Last is best known, his Chess line. These bear names borrowed from chess pieces. The Pawn is sandblasted, Rook, Knight, Bishop, Queen and King. If the plateau was on top, they were also marked Root. Numbers relate loosely to shape and not grade, and other markings are seen but not with definite meanings.
