1944 Press Photo "Human guinea pig" tests resistance to gravity, Wright Field OH
Seated in the world's fastest merry-go-round, a human guinea pig braces himself simulating aerial speeds of 500 miles an hour in the Aero-Medical Lab, Wright Field, Ohio. The ingenious machine -- called a centrifuge -- tests a pilot's resistance to extreme gravity forces met at high speeds or in violent flight maneuvers. Intricate mechanism and wiring in the cab record each of the subject's reactions, while a plaster of Paris helmet on the pilot is a brain-wave recorder. The powerful motor and delicate control of the centrifuge were developed by General Electric Company. Photo measures 10.5 x 8.25 inches. Photo Is dated 1944.
