SONICS MAKE THEIR FIRST TRIP TO THE NBA FINALS
SEATTLE, May 17 — Ahead by 21 points going into the fourth quarter, the Seattle SuperSonics tonight went on to a 123-108 victory over the Denver Nuggets that put them in the final round of the National Basketball Association playoffs for the first time in their 11‐year existence. They eliminated the Nuggets, four games to two, just as they had eliminated the defending champion, Portland, by the same margin in the preceding round.  While another capacity crowd of 14,000 screamed happily in the Seattle Coliseum, the Sonics earned the right to face the Washington Bullets in four — of — seven — game series for the championship, staying here (and on national television) Sunday afternoon.  Because of prior commitments in the Coliseum, the second and third games will be played in Washington before the teams return here for the next two, but if there is a seventh game, it will be in Seattle, which had a better regular‐season record than Washington.  Reaching the final represented a tremendous personal achievement for Lenny Wilkens, who took ever as coach on Nov, 30 when the team had a 5‐17 record. Under Wilkens, the Sonics have a 52‐23 record (including playoffs), and will take a 20‐game home winning streak into Sunday's game.  Heavily favored because of the home court advantage, the Sonics took off in the opening minutes like the aircraft for which they are named. They gained a 15‐4 lead on a series of layups on fast breaks triggered by steals and rebounds, but they didn't stay that hot after the first four minutes.  Late in the first quarter, Denver chopped its deficit from 14 to 7, but the Sonics gave another burst of jet power at that point and closed out the first quarter with a 39‐26 lead.  However, the story was different in the second period. With Marvin Webster taking a rest in the first couple of minutes the Nuggets quickly climbed to within 41‐34; when Webster come back two quick Seattle baskets (by John Sikma) restored the lead to 11 points.  But then the Denver trend re‐asserted itself. With four minutes still to go in the half, the Nuggets were within 51‐48 and for all practical purposes had nullified Seattle's fast start.  With a minute and half left in the half, Denver was trailing by only a point 55‐54. But Fred Brown then took command. He sank two free throws and then, after Webster had made one, hit a 20‐footer after a turnover and a driving layup on a court length steal. So Seattle was able to go off with a 62‐54 lead, having reestablished in 90 seconds more than half of its biggest lead.  That left Brown with 14 points, high for the game at halftime. Gus Williams had 13 for Seattle and Tony Roberts had the same number for Denver, with Dan Issel and Dave Thompson getting 11 apiece.  Essentially, though, there was balanced team scoring and rebounding on both sides, with the halftime statistics almost even — a big first quarter for Seattle, a big edge for Denver in the second, with only that last burst keeping Seattle ahead.

Seattle SuperSonics 1977-78 Season
The 1977–78 Seattle SuperSonics season was the 11th season of the franchise in the National Basketball Association (NBA). With a disappointing 5–17 start, the Sonics replaced coach Bob Hopkins with future Hall of Famer Lenny Wilkens, who led the team to a 47–35 finish. In the playoffs, the SuperSonics defeated the Los Angeles Lakers in three games in the First Round, then upset the defending NBA champions Portland Trail Blazers in six games in the Western Conference Semifinals, before finally defeating the Denver Nuggets in six games in the Conference Finals, making their first trip to the NBA Finals in franchise history, where they lost the series to the Washington Bullets in 7 games.
