This definitive work was originally published in 1855.  Published in 1973 this two-volume new edition presents the original work however starts in volume one with a biography of Thomas Babington Macaulay, born October 25th, 1800.  Volume one commences with the accession of King James II and ends with the reign of William III (William of Orange) and Mary II, his wife, who ruled together.  Also includes critical and historical essays contributed to the Edinburgh Review.  Volume two covers extensively the reign of William and Mary through to William III’s death in 1702.  Also includes miscellaneous writings and speeches.

Published in 1873 this two-volume edition remains in good / very good overall condition considering its 150 years of age.  All pages are tightly bound and are free from tears, creases, and significant marks other than some spotting to the first few and last few pages.  The marbled boards and gilt decorated spine panels and coloured author and title labels remain in good condition as do the marbled endpapers. Moderate wear to the top and bottom edges of the spines and edges, the front board of volume one is separating and has been strengthened at some time with adhesive tape, some shelf wear to the fronts, backs, and edges of the covers (please see all photographs).  The books run to 776 pages, Vol. I, and 820 pages, Vol II (18cm x 11.5cm).
