Mariners beat Athletics' ace
Griffey Sr. hits three-run HR
SEATTLE -- Seattle became the first team to beat 23-game winner Bob Welch twice this season as Erik Hanson pitched a six-hitter and Ken Griffey Sr. hit a three-run homer in the Mariners' 5-2 victory over the Oakland Athletics on Monday night.  The A's had a seven-game winning streak broken but hold a nine-game lead in the American League West over Chicago, which split a doubleheader with Cleveland.  Welch (23-6) also lost to the Mariners 6-1 on April 20 in Oakland on the night Brian Holman came within one out of a perfect game.  Welch, who has beaten Seattle once this season, was lifted with two out in the seventh.  He gave up eight hits and five runs.  Hanson (14-9), who needed last out help from Keith Comstock, who earned his second save, struck out 10 and retired 16 batters in a row between the first and sixth innings.  He is 2-0 against the A's this season and recorded his third straight victory.  Rickey Henderson and Harold Baines each doubled twice for Oakland, which had five doubles.  The 40-year-old Griffey gave Seattle a 5-1 lead in the fourth inning with his homer.  Griffey, who signed as a free agent with the Mariners on Aug. 29 after being released by Cincinnati, earlier Monday was named American League Player of the Week for Sept. 3-9.  The Mariners are 6-1 with Griffey and his son, All-Star center fielder Ken Griffey Jr., in the lineup.  Griffey's second home run in his brief stint with the Mariners came after Dave Valle doubled and Harold Reynolds singled.  Comstock struck out pinch-hitter Terry Steinbach with two runners on base to end the game.

Griffey Sr. A.L. player of the week
NEW YORK -- Ken Griffey Sr. of the Mariners and Pittsburgh's Doug Drabek were named players of the week in the American and National leagues on Monday.  The 40-year-old Griffey, signed recently by the Mariners so that he could play with his son, Ken Jr., went 12-for-19 to lead all A.L. hitters with a .632 average.  He had two doubles and a homer, drove in seven runs and led the league with a .895 slugging percentage and .682 on-base percentage.  Drabek won two games for the N.L. East-leading Pirates, allowing two earned runs in 16-2/3 innings for a 1.08 earned-run average.
