By 1965, the lovable moptops from Britain had conquered the world with their infectuous music and their memorable personalities. With incessant touring, moviemaking, and innumerable personal appearances, it's a wonder they were able to focus on their music at all. They managed, however -- and this album was the first to hint at their growing abilities and maturation. Clearly, the band was beginning to take itself very seriously lyrically and musically and obviously intended to leave their teenybopper image behind. This is the first of several musical benchmarks in the Beatles' storied career.

Personnel: John Lennon (vocals, guitar); Paul McCartney (vocals, guitar, bass, piano); George Harrison (vocals, guitar, sitar); Ringo Starr (drums, Hammond B3 organ); George Martin (harmonium); Mal “Organ" Evans (Hammond B3 organ).

VINYL GRADE: VG
Notes: Slight surface noise. A thorough cleaning will certainly bring this one back to life.

LABEL GRADE: VG+
Notes: No spindle wear, ring wear, tape, or writing. White Capitol logo in light-blue oval at top of label on black. Text is silver on black. Rainbow ring around the edge of the label. The name The Beatles does not appear on the labels, only the band members’ names. The labels on this version have the title longer than the Capitol logo. Underneath the members names are written as:
JOHN LENNON, PAUL McCARTNEY,
GEORGE HARRISON and RINGO STARR

SLEEVE GRADE: G+
Notes: Original plain white paper with olive over-color. No writing, no tape, no rips, some crinkles. Glue is loose on right side from top right corner down nine inches (easily repairable). Two-inch split at center of bottom edge. One side has one-third black outlined ad for Capitol stereo discs (text is black on olive); the other two thirds has 20 b&w Capitol artists’ album covers and accompanying text (black on olive). The other side has 30 b&w Capitol artists’ album covers and accompanying text (black on olive).

JACKET GRADE: G+
Notes: Visible ring wear. No marks, no writing, no tape, some crinkling. Edges, spine (mostly readable), and corners are worn. (See my original scan.) On the back of the jacket there is a "4" directly under “Photography: Robert Freeman,” which indicates the cover came from Imperial Packing Co., Inc., Indianapolis, Indiana. "File Under: The Beatles" is in the white border at the top right front of the jacket. The jacket lists the album as "T 2442" and the label lists it as "T-2442.”

Note: I haven't cleaned this 59-year-old vinyl record because everybody seems to prefer their own methods. I'll leave the cleaning up to the buyer. Also, I'm not a professional vinyl seller or buyer. This comes from my own collection. Bought at Leggett’s Dept Store, downtown Radford VA.

Enjoy the auction — and good luck!
