1970s RAF MK2A BONEDOME FLYING HELMET. As used and worn by RAF pilots and aircrew, also worn by EE Lightning pilots.

A lovely boxed and complete example of the very popular RAF MK2A bonedome flying helmet. It's in very good used condition, on the exterior the original white paint is in pretty good condition. With no losses or damages, we can see. The helmet has all three pieces of the plastic visor and mechanism covers. All 3 in excellent condition with no damage or splits etc. The helmet does have some day-glow stencils applied, but we don't believe these are original RAF applied. These could be removed. The red-tinted visor is in very nice condition, again no damage or chips, or splits we can see. The visor mechanism works nicely, using the yellow bar the visor can be lowered and raised. There is also a visor locking mechanism on the side, this is unfortunately not working. These are often gummed up with old oil etc, and can be freed up with some lubricating spray. The helmet is fitted with both oxygen mask hooks to the front and green leather padding all in good condition.

Inside, the leather lining has the usual foam shedding associated with 1960s/70s RAF helmets. There is some dusting from the foam degrading, it's very common and it doesn't affect the helmet at all really. The communication headset inside is again in good condition, with the gel ear pads in good condition too. These with "HEADSET ELECTRICAL" sticker. Also behind the forehead pad is another label, indicating it's a MK2A, size medium, with stores reference number 22C/1253129, serial number, broad arrow, and dated /72.

Fitted on the helmet is a nice condition H-type oxygen mask, I'm not too sure if this is the correct mask that was used with this helmet. But I believe this helmet was used privately outside of the RAF, and possibly the previous owner used the H-type mask with the helmet for their private flying. The mask is in good condition, with no issues to report and also matching date to the helmet of /72.

The helmet comes in I believe its original transit case, again in good condition. It comes with an original MK2A bonedome information booklet. Original foam padding and elastics are all still in place. A lovely set overall, perfect for any flying helmet collection, or RAF museum display.

Overall a good used MK2A flying helmet, Ideal for a RAF museum aircrew display, RAF collection or reenactor display. Postage is available worldwide but please ask for a quote first as it will need appropriate insurance cover. If you have any further questions please ask and I'll try and help. Good luck and happy bidding! :)
