The gill is a unit of measure that is equal to a quarter pint. The 1/2 Gill is a jack or 1/8 of a pint. (2oz or a tall shot)
As a special note; the 1/2 Gill was the standard daily ration of rum given to sailors in the Royal Navy.
Is still used in pubs today
