St. James's Park

Anne, Duchess of Norfolk, founded Hospice UK in 1984 and served as the first chairman. A prolific painter with a love of landscapes and natural beauty, Anne sold her paintings in aid of Hospice UK. Over the course of her lifetime it is estimated that the Duchess of Norfolk raised in excess of 10 million pounds for her charity.

Born in 1927, Anne Fitzalan-Howard was the eldest daughter of Wing commander Gerald Maxwell, a Knight of Malta and Papal Chamberlain. In 1949 Anne married Miles Fitzalan-Howard, in 1975 she became The Duchess of Norfolk, 1998 saw The Duke and Duchess gave an interview to Charlie Rose in America speaking on the subject of how she became involved with the hospice charity’s the UK.

In 1992 the Duchess was appointed CBE for her work for the hospice movement.

This painting is an original acrylic on board and depicts a scene in St. James's park with Buckingham Place and Queen Victoria’s memorial in the distance. The duchess style of painting has a naïve charm akin to that of L.S. Lowry, her work was reproduced widely in the form of limited edition prints and greetings cards to raise funds for the hospice organisations in the UK.

The painting is signed to the lower left of the work “Anne Norfolk”. The work itself is in good overall condition, with minor surface dirt a small curl to the top right of the board and some small chips to the bottom edge of the board (please see photographs).
