Christine McCausland 1944-2020

Original Oil on Canvas

City Scape

Born in Scotland in 1944 Christine McCausland was destined for the artistic life, her precocious talent for drawing began at an early age.

Christine McCausland met the author and poet Martin Bell (1918-1978) at the Edinburgh Festival in 1965 they later lived together in Leeds, in the early 1970s Christine moved to London but kept in close touch with Bell. Bell was a leading light in “The Group” an influential gathering of poets from the mid 50s to the mid 60s. McCausland documented Bell’s and her own interactions with the group and (2022/23) her archive is being catalogued at Leeds University.

She exhibited widely throughout her life, almost compulsively drawing daily, McCausland had many influences from the Impressionists of late 19th century France to the Bloomsbury Group.

The ‘City Scape’ brings both of these influences together, the muted tones of the Bloomsbury artists like Grant and Bell combine with the controlled strokes and pallet of Bonnard or Morisot.

The painting is in good order with minor surface scratches and a minor warp to the stretcher, the painting would benefit from a fine frame to display and present it to its best.

Signed on the stretcher - C McCausland.
