Alfie And The FerryBoat - Charles Keeping - 1968 First 1st Edition

Alfie and the Ferryboat is a wonderful childrens' story that Londoner Charles Keeping (1922-1988) wrote and illustrated about a small boy living in Woolwich on the River Thames and his relationship with ‘Old Bunty’ the sailor and his dog. The story develops as Alfie tries to find Old Bunty and ends up on the Woolwich Ferry which takes him to ‘the other side of the world’.

When Alfie and the Ferryboat was published in 1968 by Oxford University Press, Charles Keeping was at the height of his career as an illustrator. The series of books he produced at this time are full of his experimental colour images using layered effects. The illustrations are striking, almost psychedelic and very much of their 1960's heritage.

With his deep knowledge of and affinity with London, Charles Keeping was chosen by the Folio Society to illustrate the entire set of Charles Dickens for them.
