ARTHUR, DUKE OF CONNAUGHT & STRATHEARN (1850-1942). Inscribed portrait photograph by W. & D. Downey, c.1919. Photographic portrait postcard (possibly halftone or similar process), a bust portrait showing Arthur in military dress, seated and facing left, inscribed by Arthur in blank space to right of photograph 'A happy Christmas & New Year, Arthur, Xmas 1919' around the apparently printed manuscript facsimile message 'With all best wishes from'. Mounted, mount aperture 90 x 138 mm, portrait dimensions 80 x 57 mm. A few spots to foot, mount damp-stained recto and with impressions from mounting tacks verso. Arthur, Duke of Connaught and Strathearn, was the third son of Queen Victoria and pursued a highly distinguished career as an army officer and colonial governor, culminating in his appointment as governor-general of Canada in 1911. He was the the last British prince to command a significant formation in the field, at Tell el-Kebir in Egypt in 1882, and subsequently served as governor of Cairo during the pacification of Egypt before becoming travelling in India to become commander-in-chief of the Bombay army, after which he was appointed commander-in-chief in Malta and high commissioner in the Mediterranean.
