This listing is for the mini diorama shown in the first 5 photos only. It depicts P.T. Barnum's Mighty Jumbo (the largest beast on Earth) with his ring act partner, the dwarf elephant TOM THUMB, and Jumbo's handler "Scotty" (who had been with him since age 4). Jumbo arrived in America, in 1882 at the age of 21, to massive sold out crowds. The country was in love. But all that would tragically end on Sept. 15, 1885 in Canada. Jumbo and Tom Thumb were the closing act for the show that year and last to leave the big top. While walking along the tracks to their rail cars, an unscheduled freight train bore down on them. Tom Thumb was the first to be hit, knocking him into a ditch and breaking his leg (he survived). Jumbo was then stuck and dragged nearly 300 feet before derailing the locomotive. As Jumbo lay dying, he rested his trunk in Scotty's hand. Scotty stayed with Jumbo's body all night, fighting off souvenir hunters who wanted a piece. But even in death, Jumbo continued with the show. Barnum had taxidermists mount the remains and he was displayed until 1889. The last 6 photos are examples of prototypes and not included.
