Byron Gurnsey stereograph depicting an old adobe pueblo
building in Santa Fe New Mexico. From his series “Views on the Line of the
Atchison, Topeks & Santa Fe Railroad. Text states the pueblo was found on
the site of Santa Fe when Spaniards first came in 1581. It is still occupied by
six families. *Byron H Gurnsey (1833-1880), having just learned the trade of
photography (I suspect while in Sioux City the previous winter, probably
working with Charles L. Hamilton), Gurnsey brought his camera with him on
Sully's final expedition. In August 1865, while the troops rested at Fort
Berthold, he produced at least nine surviving images. Byron H. Gurnsey operated
a photographic gallery in Sioux City, Iowa from about 1866 until he sold out in
1871. Gurnsey moved to Colorado in 1872, locating first in Pueblo and later
Colorado Springs, Colorado. He made a trip to New Mexico in 1878. This view is
likely from his 1878 trip. Small nicks on both images, but the image remains
strong and sharp. See scans.
