1955 Press Photo Hawker Hunter planes fly in formation - nei21608
This is an original press photo. U.S. buys jets for Britain. Washington: The United States is buying 465 jet fighter planes from British manufacturers for Britain's Royal Air Force, it was announced July 29. The Hawker Hunter planes, a flight of which is shown above, originally earmarked for another European country, will cost $140,000,000 (M). The American decision to turn over the British-built planes, which are in the 700-miles-an-hour class, to Britain's armed forces marked a shift in "offshore procurement" plans as worked out in 1952. At that time officials said this country would buy British planes for other NATO countries in an effort to build up British production and speed NATO arming. However, it was said then that American funds would not buy British planes for British forces.Photo measures 9 x 7inches. Photo is dated 07-29-1955.
